"The animals you say were ‘sent’ For man’s free use and nutriment. Pray, then, inform me, and be candid Why came they aeons before Man did, To spend long centuries on earth Awaiting their devourer’s birth? Those ill-timed chattels, sent from heaven, Were, sure, the maddest gift e’er given – ‘sent’ for man’s use (can man believe it?) when there was no man to receive it!" Henry S. Salt 1851 – 1939

 'LIVING WITHOUT CRUELTY' COOKBOOK

 alt

The book fee is a mere R100 incl post and packaging

Meat consumption causes more suffering and death than any other human activity and is completely unnecessary. The inclusion of flesh foods is using up our water and land resources, polluting our planet  and directly contributing to the starving of millions of people world wide as well as causing ill health through heart disease, cancer and more.

BWC felt that in order to make things easier for people considering changing their eating habits, a cookbook with locally available ingredients and with easy and often familiar recipes, albeit with a twist, was essential. Initially our first little booklet was in response to requests and the positive feedback ensured the already planned cookbook. To this end, all the recipes have been tried and in many cases, are firm household favourites of the author (myself) or the other contributors.

Thus we have 89 recipes that are easily within in the grasp of anyone familiar with the kitchen, and we have included information on certain items such as nutritional yeast flakes, tofu, protein, the newer ‘super food’s that are easily available such as goji berries and walnuts, information on the dairy industry, farming and more. We also offer a small selection of familiar food items that are animal ingredient free, most of which can be found at the local supermarket, a large pharmacy chain or health stores. Recipes have been included, by a few famous South Africans who eat with conscience and they also include their favourite quote with us.

This will be one of those books where the readers will try most of the recipes, and will be sure to dip into on a regular basis. from Mediterranean Baked peppers, Spiced Chickpea cake with roasted vegetables and Braaied Brinjal steaks to Chickpea and mushroom curry pancakes and Toni’s terrific fishless cakes, Cauliflower lemon sauce for pasta and Mushroom nut rolls to sweet endings like upside down Banana Loaf, Whiskey fudge and amazing chocolate cake, this book is sure to please.

Of course the purchase of the book also supports the work that Beauty Without Cruelty does to expose and act upon animal abuse and exploitation in all forms, including farming, vivisection, wildlife exploitation, cosmetic testing and animals in Entertainment, which makes this a worthwhile purchase in any event!

Some recipes have been submitted by well known South Africans, including Patricia Glyn, intrepid traveller,  author and speaker, Jo Day, SA’s queen of rock and Claire Johnston and John Ledyen, of  Mango Groove.

Our grateful thanks to Charoltte Rhys or their generous support of this project!
