MEAT FREE MONDAYS
If you are not already vegetarian or vegan, but concerned about your health, the state of the planet and animals, what you eat is an important tool in working to achieve environmental sustainability. Meat Free Mondays are an easy way to lower your own environmental impact and help ensure worldwide food security.
The demand for animal flesh / byproducts is expected to more than double by the year 2050. In order to meet this growing appetite, animals will no doubt be reared more intensively and cheaply with factory farming and aquaculture (fish farming) causing further pollution, water and land usage. If nothing is done, the devastating environmental impact of meat production can only increase. ![]() Claire Johnston of Mango Groove fame and her entrepreneur husband John Leyden,
both support the Meat Free Monday campaign.
Pledge your support for the Meat Free Monday campaign, a Fry's initiative, in association with BWC, The Vegan Society, WESSA , ARA and the Animal Anti-Cruelty League and win! Also, you can support us with your purchase of a shopper, bracelet or booklet
ATTENTION VEGETARIANS if you are vegetarian, you can contribute by starting with one dairy and egg free Monday weekly - the milk and egg industry contributes significantly to pollution, and end-of-lay birds are destined for the slaughterhouse as are dairy cows who are unable to produce sufficent milk.
Turning a single chicken into meat at the abattoir takes an estimated 14 litres of water. Multiply this figure by the number of chickens slaughtered annually in South Africa (761 million). The water that drains away from chicken abattoirs is 10.6 billion litres annually - or 29 million daily!! This figure does not include the water required to rear the chickens or to grow the crops to feed them. It is simply the processing of the chicken.
See our newsletters for easy recipes, and the Fry's range of truly delicious, easy prep frozen burgers, schnitzels, hot dogs, burgers, nuggets, sausages, heat 'n eat sausage rolls and cottage pie makes Meat Free Mondays, well, easy as pie! Meat consumption causes more suffering and death than any other human activity and is completely unnecessary. The inclusion of flesh foods is using up our water and land resources, polluting our planet and directly contributing to the starving of millions of people world wide as well as causing ill health through heart disease, cancer and more. BWC felt that in order to make things easier for people considering changing their eating habits, a cookbook with locally available ingredients and with easy and often familiar recipes, albeit with a twist, was essential. Initially our first little booklet was in response to requests and the positive feedback ensured the already planned cookbook. To this end, all the recipes have been tried and in many cases, are firm household favourites of the author (myself) or the other contributors. Thus we have 89 recipes that are easily within in the grasp of anyone familiar with the kitchen, and we have included information on certain items such as nutritional yeast flakes, tofu, protein, the newer ‘super food’s that are easily available such as goji berries and walnuts, information on the dairy industry, farming and more. We also offer a small selection of familiar food items that are animal ingredient free, most of which can be found at the local supermarket, a large pharmacy chain or health stores. Recipes have been included, by a few famous South Africans who eat with conscience and they also include their favourite quote with us. This will be one of those books where the readers will try most of the recipes, and will be sure to dip into on a regular basis. from Mediterranean Baked peppers, Spiced Chickpea cake with roasted vegetables and Braaied Brinjal steaks to Chickpea and mushroom curry pancakes and Toni’s terrific fishless cakes, Cauliflower lemon sauce for pasta and Mushroom nut rolls to sweet endings like upside down Banana Loaf, Whiskey fudge and amazing chocolate cake, this book is sure to please. Of course the purchase of the book also supports the work that Beauty Without Cruelty does to expose and act upon animal abuse and exploitation in all forms, including farming, vivisection, wildlife exploitation, cosmetic testing and animals in Entertainment, which makes this a worthwhile purchase in any event! Some recipes have been submitted by well known South Africans, including Patricia Glyn, intrepid traveller, author and speaker, Jo Day, SA’s queen of rock and Claire Johnston and John Ledyen, of Mango Groove. Our grateful thanks to Charoltte Rhys for their generous support of this project! BEAUTY WITHOUT CRUELTY TEESHIRTS We still have a few 'I'm not into clubbing' tees, with a picture of a young seal head, available.
